WATER QUALITY / LEVELS
Water Quality in District 2
Since its inception, District 2 has prioritized the monitoring of groundwater quality and quantity. This has been achieved through the installation of observation wells strategically located across the region. Altogether, nearly 250 sites are monitored for water levels, with close to 150 of those also designated for water quality sampling.
Each applicant must collect a water sample from within five feet of the aquifer's base. This sample must be tested for chloride content by a laboratory certified by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The results of this analysis, along with a copy of the test hole log, must be submitted to the District.
If the water sample shows a chloride concentration greater than 500 milligrams per liter (mg/l), the District will recommend denial of the application to appropriate water from that source.
Assess the Quality of Your Water!
The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) has received funding to establish a broad groundwater quality monitoring network. The goals of this effort are to:
-
Collect baseline groundwater chemistry data to identify areas at risk or already exceeding health standards and detect future changes.
-
Develop a public data system that connects groundwater quality information across agencies and integrates with KGS’s current water databases for better tracking of both quality and quantity.

Statewide Water Level Monitoring
The WIZARD database serves as a centralized hub for groundwater data that was once spread across multiple local, state, and federal agencies. Today, approximately two-thirds of the annual water level measurements are provided by local Groundwater Management Districts (GMDs) and the Division of Water Resources, while the remaining data is maintained and updated by the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). WIZARD is managed and operated by the KGS and remains a key resource for tracking water level trends across Kansas.
